Judit German-Heins | Covered

Covered is a recent, still running project of mine where I use the wet plate collodion (tintype) photographing technique to take portraits of women of different faith who cover their heads for religious purposes. This technique was popular in the second part of the 19th and early 20th century. I use a large format, accordion type camera to capture images on an aluminum plate that carries a light sensitive chemical. I mix the solutions and cover the plate with it right before the photo is taken, then develop it in the dark room. The process is longer and more involved than taking digital photos, but the results is beautiful photographic art.
